Hult tackles innovation with Amazon Launchpad Hult Blog

Every year Hult’s undergraduate students have the unique opportunity to participate in the Hult Business Challenge, a competitive capstone project in which teams work directly with a major corporate client to solve a critical business challenge. This years client is the leading force in global commerce—Amazon. In 2015, Amazon announced Amazon Launchpad, a groundbreaking program showcasing products from cutting-edge startups to millions of Amazon customers. By working with the input of leading crowd-funding sites, incubators and venture capital firms, Amazon Launchpad makes it easy for entrepreneurs to launch inventive new products and get them discovered on Amazon. As Amazon further develops this new accelerator platform in key countries, they’re looking to challenge the way they’re currently interacting with startups. Amazon sees an opportunity in feeding startups with market and consumer trends and analysis in the early stages of their innovation process, improving product success. Amazon wants to close the innovation loop, reframing the way they collaborate with their startup partners. Miguel Martins Head of Amazon Launchpad U.K. introduced the challenge to students in the London campus. So whats the challenge at hand for Hult students? Amazon wants them to help them figure out how they, as a big company, can talk to small ones. The ultimate goal is for Hult students to develop actionable strategies so that Amazon can build sustainable relationships with the startup scene. On the client’s side, the project is being championed by Amazon’s Director of Global Innovation, Jason Feldman. Jason first came to Hult as a visiting speaker in January of 2016, and his experience interacting with Hult students convinced him that Hult was the right partner for this project. While Amazon have run innovation fairs and hackathons across the United States over the past few years, they have never worked with a university on a project at this scale of collaboration. To tackle this challenge Hult students will form small collaborative teams, led by a faculty mentor, and develop their solutions over the course of a semester. The teams will compete through multiple knock-out rounds, culminating in a final client pitch to present their strategies. The program is designed to give students first-hand experience honing their presentation, communication, and critical thinking skills, preparing them to pitch ideas in a real-world business environment. This hands-on approach to the study of business is what drives Hult’s curriculum and sets Hult students apart when they enter the corporate world. This will be Hult’s first truly global undergraduate challenge, with Amazon committed to launching the challenge simultaneously in San Francisco and London. The challenge kicks off in December of 2016, and over one hundred undergraduate students are expected to participate. The winning team will be announced in April of 2017. Stereotypes exist in many different forms with the most common referring to gender and culture. Roxanne Gay talks about the difficult struggles that women have to deal with such as the usage of birth control and the process of having an abortion. While Judith Cofer takes a similar route with a few differences. Her article talks specifically about the struggles of a Latin woman. Both articles talk about the obstacles women are faced with while also taking the time to focus on specific topics. â€Å"The Alienable Rights of Women† by Roxanne Gay and â€Å"The Myth of the Latin Woman† by Judith Cofer complement each other because they both discuss how women are perceived and stereotyped by others/society. USDA Loans and Grants for Single Family Home Repair

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) offers low-interest loans and grants to very-low-income homeowners in eligible rural areas for certain improvements to their homes. Specifically, the USDA’s Single Family Housing Repair Loans and Grants Program offers: Loans to qualified very-low-income homeowners to repair, improve, or modernize their homes. Loans may be used to repair, improve, or modernize the home, or to remove health and safety hazards from the home.Grants to qualified elderly very-low-income homeowners. Grants must be used to remove health and safety hazards from the home. Who Can Apply? In order to qualify for loans or grants, applicants must: Be the homeowner and actually live in the home;Be a citizen of the United States or reside in the United States after having been granted legal permanent resident (green card) status;Be financially unable to obtain affordable credit elsewhere;Have a combined family income below 50% of the area median income; andFor grants, be age 62 or older and be financially unable to repay a conventional home repair loan. What is an Eligible Area? USDA Single Family Housing Repair Loans and Grants Program loans and grants are generally available to homeowners in rural areas with community populations of less than 35,000. The USDA provides a web page where prospective applicants can check their address to determine their eligibility online. Within the population limit, loans and grants are available in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, the Northern Marianas and the Trust Territories of the Pacific Islands. How Much Money is Available? Loans of up to $20,000 and grants of up to $7,500 are available. However, a person age 62 or older may be eligible for combined loans and grants totaling up to $27,500. What are the Terms of the Loans or Grants? Compared to conventional home repair loans, with interest rates averaging over 4.5%, the terms of the USDA loans are very attractive. Loan interest rates are fixed at 1%.Loans can be repaid over a period of 20 years.Full title service is required for loans of $7,500 or more. (Title service fees are costs associated with issuing a title insurance policy for the lender.)Grants have a lifetime limit of $7,500.Grants do not have to be repaid unless the house is sold in less than 3 years.If the applicant can repay part, but not all of the costs, the applicant may be offered a combination of a loan and a grant. Are There Deadlines to Apply? As long as Congress continues to fund the program in the annual federal budget, applications for the loans and grants can be submitted year around. How Long Does the Application Take? Applications for loans and grants are processed in the order they are received. Processing times may vary depending on the availability of funds in the applicant’s area. How Do You Apply? To begin the process, applicants should meet with a USDA home loan specialist in their area for help with the application. What Laws Govern this Program? RS Thomas hardened, and his mode of thought reflected into his poetry. The first poems I am going to compare are â€Å"Westminster Bridge† by William Wordsworth and â€Å"A day in autumn† by RS Thomas. In the first poem â€Å"Westminster Bridge† you can tell from the first line that Wordsworth was a romanticist. â€Å"Earth has not any thing to show more fair:† He is saying that this is the most radiant and beautiful place on the earth. He finds so much passion in the sight that he goes as far to insult a person that could walk past such a noteworthy scene with out admiring it. † Dull would be of soul who could pass by.† In the poem he expresses a feeling of gratitude and exuberance. He makes you feel this with the words he uses for example, â€Å"fair, majesty, beauty, bright, splendour, calm and sweet.† All these point to the romanticist that he is. The main impression the poem conveys is that one of peace, stillness and admiration. â€Å"The river glideth at his own sweet will.† The way he talks of the sun waking up over the city and the river just gives you a sense of time and tranquillity. It just slows the whole poem down and then brings it to a stop. There is a rhyming scheme employed within this poem. It goes: a, b, b, a, a, b, b, a, c, d, c, d. It suits the poems theme as the repeated rhyming with the breaks give a sustained effect. The sudden change into the new c, d, c, d scheme is like the feeling of the first light. â€Å"Never did the sun more beautifully steep.† It does suit the theme of the poem. At the end Wordsworth says†¦ † And all that the mighty heart is lying still!† The heart is what I am referring to. The last part is like a heart beat, as he Rhymes it one after the other. The rhythm is the finally explained at the end (the quote above). William Wordsworth uses many styles of imagery to paint the representation of London in our minds. In the line†¦ â€Å"The city now doth like a garment Wear, the beauty of the morning.† Wordsworth uses the simile to pretend the city is wearing the morning. He is saying that when he sees it, it suits it. It looks good. This is also a form of personification wearing is something a human does. He referred to the sun with his; he is therefore showing respect. He also mentioned the river as a ‘his’; using personification brings it to life and making it more intense. â€Å"In his first splendour† And â€Å"The river glideth at his Own sweet will.† He is so struck by the sight he exclaims â€Å"Dear God! † Then he uses another piece of personification to make the calmness more obvious. The river flowing slowly and the houses are being asleep. He then uses a metaphor on the last line. † And all that the mighty heart Is lying still.† This is a significant piece of imagery brought out with this metaphor. The heart is one of the most important organs in the body. It supplies the rest of the body with blood and keeps us alive. In the same way London, England is the compared to the heart as it ‘pulses’ sending the economy and exports in terms of finance to the rest of the world. Employees: IronPorts employees were going through the same dilemma which happens with the employee of any acquired company, they were afraid of any layoff. They were also not ready to adapt to any new culture, they wanted to work in the same IronPorts environment in which they have been working for so long. Channels of IronPort: IronPort has 500 channel partners, with 150 being in North America. These channels are very effective for IronPort sales, if these are integrated then either Cisco will have a conflict with these channels or these these channels have problem with Cisco. First, should make 18 months integration plan, as IronPort is a big Company with more than 500 employees, they should integrate it slowly with one step at a time. They should let the marketing and sales team work independently while allowing financing and other area to work with Ciscos team. They should let engineers work on the product in which they were working before acquisiton. For Channels of IronPort, for the initial stage they should let the IronPort team use their channel for the sale of their product, while using the name of Cisco, meanwhile they should allow the sales team to understand each Ciscos product so that they can sell them in future through their channel. They should let the compensation of Sales team remain same, and over time increase the compensation of their own sales team, so that they can establish a common compensation scheme for the whole company. If they rush in their integration process, it might lead to a disaster, so to play safe; they should slowly integrate IronPort into their company. Conclusion From the above analysis we get to see various results, we were to decide whether acquisition of IronPort by Cisco would be a better decision or not. We first checked whether Cisco is capable of making the Security Product on its own or they need to buy it from outsiders and then sell it in the market with their own brand name and advertising technique. The only struggle Cisco will be facing in this acquisition is integration of IronPort with Cisco. For that we can make sure that Cisco doesnt rush in to integration with IronPort immediately, when the employees of IronPort are comfortable with the culture and the environment of Cisco, then they should integrate it fully, so that in future there wont be any conflict between the companies.
